From Template to Digital Layout

Fabrication begins with the measurements captured at template. Those measurements become a digital drawing of every piece: perimeter runs, island, backsplash pieces, returns and any specialty parts. The drawing is then positioned over an image of your actual slab so you can see where the pattern will land on each finished piece.

This layout review is the most valuable moment in the entire process for a homeowner. It is where you can ask for the strongest movement to be centered on the island, request a seam be shifted, or notice that a large mineral cluster would land awkwardly at the sink. Once cutting begins, the slab cannot be un-cut.

Cutting and Cutouts

• Primary cuts separate the slab into rough pieces following the approved layout.
• Sink cutouts are machined to the specific sink model, with polished interior edges for undermount installations.
• Cooktop cutouts follow the appliance manufacturer's dimensions and clearance requirements.
• Faucet and accessory holes are drilled to the specified configuration and spacing.
• Inside corners are typically radiused slightly rather than cut perfectly sharp, which reduces stress concentration in the stone.

Edge Machining and Polishing

Exposed edges are shaped to the selected profile and then polished through progressively finer abrasives so the edge matches the slab surface. Built-up or mitered edges are assembled from two pieces of stone joined at an angle, then blended and polished so the seam reads as a solid thicker slab. This is skilled work and it is the difference between an edge that looks factory-made and one that looks handmade in the wrong way.

Seam Preparation and Fit Checks

Seam edges are cut straight and true so that when the pieces meet on site the joint is tight and the pattern lines up as planned. Many fabricators dry-fit critical assemblies in the shop before delivery to verify that corner angles, cutouts and overall dimensions are correct — catching an issue in the shop is far easier than discovering it in your kitchen.

Fissures, Resin and Stone Inspection

Slabs are inspected during fabrication. Natural fissures are part of many granites and are not the same as structural cracks. Some slabs arrive from the quarry with a resin treatment applied to the surface, which is normal for certain stones and helps stabilize and enhance them. If something in a slab looks structurally questionable, it is better to address it before fabrication than after installation.

Finishes: Polished, Honed and Leathered

Polished is the most common finish and gives granite its reflective depth and easy cleaning. Honed produces a matte, low-sheen surface that reads softer but can show fingerprints and water marks more readily on dark stones. Leathered adds subtle texture and hides smudges well. Availability varies significantly by stone — not every granite is offered or practical in every finish.
